Tips you need to know about driving the snow.
Always Clean off all windows and mirrors, and headlights along with taillights. Its probably the most important thing before driving in the snow, since you want people to SEE YOU, and you want to be able see people. I see so many lazy people who even up hitting another car because they failed to clean off the car properly.
Make sure you wheel gaps, and wells are clear of snow every once in awhile, I have a lowered car so I clean mine often, and make sure their nice and clean to help with turning.
some basic things to remember when your on the road.
1. Drive steady- you don’t know how true it is till you do it, people lose control of their car when they panic, or slam the breaks. If you can slowly and carefully cross snow patches or change lanes you will never run into losing control.
2. Brake early- I have quite of experience with snow driving, being that i went to school in suny buffalo, but yea i had to avoid people who missed a right turn due to them braking so late, therefore i missed the turn to avoid their rear end. Thankfully i know where my car is going to slide and i can recover after they moved on.
3. Keep distance and lots of space – something people forget to do.
4. Signal early check mirrors, recall if you are in a lane. I won’t tell you how bad it was today to drive I had to make my own lane since people hogged the whole road. If its untouched snow remember steady acceleration and feather the throttle bit by bit if you think your slipping. It will help retain traction, you don’t want to start spinning your wheels crazy but slight feathering can help line you back on.
5. Follow people’s tracks, its the best way but not for everyone, some suv will make big tracks and their quite hard to get out of. I know i run snow tires and all seasons and my all seasons fail me when it comes to getting stuck or out of peoples tracks, and driveways. Other than that I practice the same few things when it comes to driving in the snow.
6.. If you start to slide or lose control don’t panic, let the car slide out it will regain its original path if your are going at a steady pace. It might scare you and others but if you kept space and distance others can be prepared to take action. I swayed left and right but i kept my space from people so they eased of their speed, and let me spin, then i caught traction and my original path, and continue on. It is not hard to drive in snow if your steady and keep a few things in mind.
Of course we all like our fun, but keep it to a parking lot, I will tell you I did get pulled over in a parking lot, but i kindly told the office I was seeing how this car drives in snow with snow tires. It was my first time in buffalo. He let me go with no problems, said just take it easy and be careful with poles, but he liked the idea that I was preparing myself.
5 years of driving in snow at buffalo- I still lose control once in awhile I can’t control everything or people around me. I just need to keep my steady pace and take my time. Snow tires do help in heavy snow, but it still is up to the drive, to be responsible, check his surroundings and make it through.
I think i should raise my car but its too much work its still funny how much snow I plow =P, my car makes a smiley face when it eats snow.
